Iron lung device used to treat muscle paralysis and breathing apparatus . And sometimes called the iron lung artificial respiratory system , or the ventilation fan ( aerated ) . In cases of paralysis , losing chest muscle movement , and patients are exposed to the risk of suffocation ; because they can not get enough air to the lungs . The use of iron lung helps patients with the disease to breathe .

Iron lung and a large metal tank , connected to a pump change of air intake is located inside the tank , and pressure . The patient lies inside the tank and it remains outside the only head. A fitness of rubber in the neck to prevent air leakage . The pump pulls air from the tank between 15 to 30 times per minute through ; then brings the patient's chest , and air enters through the nose and mouth . The iron lung saved many lives during the fifties when polio epidemics . There are many other kinds of breathing machines , used in a manner more common at the present time .

Iron lung helps a person to breathe despite the fact that the chest muscles are paralyzed . And the patient's head just outside of the machine and can open panels in the side of the tank compartment to enable the doctor to examine the patient .
