Yoga for Any Body

Yoga, an ancient practice originating in India, aims to bring about spiritual insight and tranquility while practicing poses that use the breath to gain stability and control over the body.

For most of people, yoga also represents another form of fitness that uses different body muscles (such as the core muscles of the abdomen area) to gain fitness, calm the mind and improve flexibility. And, contrary to what you may see at the gym or in a yoga studio, you do not have to be a size two to practice yoga.

Many gyms and yoga centers offer classes designed to improve the health, performance, and mental acuity of people interested in improving their level of fitness. Yoga classes are also designed to meet the needs and body types of all individuals –not just the very fit.

If you are ready to try a yoga class, it’s important to remember there are many styles of yoga. Find a yoga class that suits your fitness level by talking to the instructor or studio owner. He or she can recommend a class, instructor and/or style for a good yoga fit.

Dress Comfortably for Yoga

Put on your yoga wear and put yourself in some yoga positions, or just bend and stretch. Make sure nothing binds or pinches you, or shows parts of your body you’d rather be covered. Also, fitted clothing makes it easier for your instructor to check your posture.

Prepare Your Yoga Equipment

Call ahead to find out if yoga mats and any other equipment you might need for your first classes, including blocks or straps, are available to borrow. If not, you'll need to secure your own.

Arrive Early for Yoga Class

Arrive 10 to 20 minutes before class starts to secure a place and your equipment. If this is your first class, let your instructor know that you are new and ask where it would be best to position yourself.

Let the Yoga Teacher Help You

Your yoga teacher is there to help you. Yoga poses can be dangerous if done incorrectly, so your teacher's tips will help prevent injury. If you don't understand how to do a pose, ask the instructor.

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t at your goal weight, everyone’s body is different. The important thing is to not push yourself beyond your limits, enjoy the practice and remember that yoga is not a competitive sport.
